2021年度卒業生が執筆した卒業研究論文の中から、指導教員の推薦に基づいて論文を選出しました。「卒業研究」は英語英文学科の必修科目で、4年間の学びの集大成となります。選ばれたみなさま、おめでとうございます！

Barrsゼミ/礒合諒さん「A Linguistic Investigation of Guidance Signs in the Astram Line Stations」

要旨	This research involved an investigation of the extent of multilingualism on information signs used on a public transportation in Hiroshima. The study involved recording, examining, and categorising 275 signboards collected from along the Astram Line transportation network, with a focus not only on which languages appeared on the signs, but also in what order they appeared. The results were then cross-referenced with data on the foreign population in Hiroshima, finding that whilst there was a relatively high degree of multilingualism on the signs in terms of English translations, the number of Chinese and Korean translations was significantly lower, with some further issues identified in how the languages were ordered, and where they appeared within the stations.
指導教員からのコメント	The strength of this graduation research lies in the extensiveness of the investigation, with nearly 300 signs being examined, and its applied community-based value in considering how multilingual support can best be offered on Japanese transportation networks. The research was carried out in a very methodical manner, and the final thesis was well-constructed and supported with data and insightful discussions, making it a very interesting read.

要旨

Ronaldゼミ/三浦唯さん「Request strategies in English TED Talks: A focus on a relationship between ‘please’ and other request strategies」

要旨	Yui Miura’s research combines an investigation of a pragmatic issue with corpus linguistics: a corpus investigation of the use of the word 'please' with imperatives or modal forms. Each occurrence in the TED Talk spoken corpus of please was identified and then categorised. Ms Miura then listened to each occurrence in the TED Talk recordings to note the context and speed of production of 'please' by the speakers.
指導教員からのコメント	Outstanding features of this thesis and the research it describes range from the specificity of the topic it addresses to the identification of the most suitable methods to investigate the topic, and to the effort involved in dealing with the over 500 spoken instances of 'please' found in the corpus interrogated as part of this research. As such, the research paid attention to the areas of pragmatics, corpus linguistics, and phonology. The research raised as many questions as it answered, but it is a promising debut to this student’s entry into the world of linguistic research.

石塚ゼミ/渡邉伊織さん「Simultaneous Interpreter’s Construal of Events and Properties -Development of Conceptual Framing-」

要旨	This study aims to explore the development of concepts in an interpreter’s mind during simultaneous interpreting (SI). An interpreter’s performance can be a window onto their cognitive processing under the surface of a linguistic operation of the interpreting task. The study analyzes records of actual SI performances, observing linguistic differences between expressions in the source and target texts, drawing on the model of conceptual complexes (e.g. Funayama, 2007). The study tries to trace how an interpreter incrementally constructs frames of the speaker’s message throughout online discourse processing, focusing on two different types of concept: event and property.

要旨	本研究ではJ. D. Salingerの代表作The Catcher in the Ryeにおいて、主人公Holden Caulfieldがいかに自己像を構築していくのかを考察する。思春期の少年の心の揺れや兄弟愛に着目しつつ、性、お金、そして妹のPhoebeを軸に、本作における自己像の有様を追究する。
指導教員からのコメント	The Catcher in the Ryeは思春期の少年の心を鮮やかに描き、多くの若者の心を掴んだ作品です。その要因の一つとして、反抗的な主人公Holdenの姿に当時の若者が共鳴したことが挙げられます。本研究はHoldenの自己像が女性との関係性によって構築されていることを論証した上で、妹Phoebeの重要性を指摘しています。時代の寵児ホールデンだけでなく、幼い少女にも目を向けるべきだという万力さんの主張には説得力があります。作品を精緻に読み込み、深い考察に基づく丁寧な議論がなされていました。

佐川ゼミ/光田百花さん「シェイクスピア作品に登場する女性の役割」

要旨	シェイクスピア作品における女性の役割について論じた卒業研究論文である。女性が抑圧されていた時代にありながら、シェイクスピアは女性に好意的であったのではないかという視点から、『マクベス』においては魔女とマクベス夫人の言動がマクベスに与えた意義、そして『ロミオとジュリエット』においてはジュリエットの行動の積極性について論じている。

大澤ゼミ/中田真由夏さん「TED Talksの英語スピーチにみられる言語的特徴」

要旨	TED Talksのスピーチの中から英語母語話者によるもの10、非英語母語話者によるもの10、また女性によるもの8つを抽出し、スピーチの特徴を分析した。分析対象となった言語的特徴は法助動詞、人称代名詞、形容詞、問いかけ、修辞法の5つである。当然ながらトピックの影響は考えられるものの、法助動詞ではcanやwillが多く用いられていること、人称代名詞ではweが多用されていること、形容詞ではglobal、social、economicといったものに加えて、great、new、goodなど主観的な評価を表す形容詞が多く用いられていること、そして聴衆への問いかけも多く、修辞法においても工夫されていることなどが全体的な傾向として明らかになった。
