現地での生活も折り返し地点を迎えましたが、留学している生徒たちはしっかりと学校の授業に取り組んでいるようです。中には自分の学習レベルに合わせて履修する授業の変更を申し出た生徒もいるようで、それぞれが自分に合った学びを展開していることをうかがっています。

We had a BBQ at school starting at 5:30pm. We invited students studying abroad from various countries, homestay hosts, and others to the big BBQ, with a total of about 300 people in attendance. Unfortunately, it rained that day, and there were a lo t of mishaps. The meal was served buffet style, with as many different side dishes as you wanted on one plate. Some of the dishes were to your liking, and some not, but they were all very delicious. After the meal, ice cream was prepared, and we a ll ran to get it and ate it deliciously. While we were eating the ice cream, a kid from Korea started singing using the guitar he had brought with him. It was something you don't see in Japan, and it was a lot of fun.

(先日、学校で夕方の17：30からBBQがありました。いろんな国から留学に来ている生徒の人、ホームステイのホストなどを招き、総勢300人程が参加しました。その日の天気はあいにく雨で、様々なハプニングがありました。ご飯はワンプレートにいろんなおかずを好きなだけ乗せていくバイキング形式でした。口に合うものもあれば会わないものもありましたがとてもおいしかったです。食後にはアイスクリームが用意されていてみんなで走って取りに行き、おいしく食べました。アイスを食べていると、韓国から来ていた子が持参のギターを 使って歌を歌い始めました。日本ではないような出来事でとても楽しかったです。)

We had a school athletic day on Thursday. Our school, SBHS, has a unique system of four-colour schoolhouses, like in Harry Potter. I belong to the “Snell house” which is a yellow one. Each schoolhouse competes for points in these events. The most different point between Kiwi and Japanese athletic day is that students are free to participate. We can choose which competitions we want to join. I joined the 100m and 200m and 400m races, and enjoyed competing with my friends. On SaturdayI joined a one-day school trip. The teacher of our international department took us to Hanmer Springs. Hanmer Springs is located 106 km north-west of Christchurch, and it is a famous sightseeing area. First, we enjoyed riding a Jet Boat in the river. It was a very exciting experience for me but the weather was pretty cold. After that, we went to the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa. There were hot springs and some exciting water slides. I thought the only country which had hot springs was Japan, so I was surprised to hear that New Zealand had hot springs too. I was happy to get into the hot springs because I have been showering since I arrived in New Zealand. So, what I want to tell here is that Kiwi people don't have the culture of ta king a bath. They only take a shower on their days. I was glad to be able to explain to my host family about differences between Japanese and Kiwi cultures as I described before at dinner time. Previously I could only tell them things like ‘It was fun’, but recently I have been able to tell them more details. The difference of cultures is also an interesting thing for me.

(木曜日に運動会がありました。私たちの学校は、ハリーポッターのように4色の校舎というユニークなシステムを採用しています。私は黄色の「スネルハウス」に所属しています。各校舎はこれらのイベントでポイントを競います。ニュージーランドと日本の運動会の最も大きな違いは、生徒が自由に参加できることです。どの競技に参加するかは自分で選ぶことができます。私は100m、200m、400mのレースに参加し、友達と競い合いました。土曜日は、1日校外学習に参加しました。国際部の先生がハンマースプリングスに連れて行ってく れました。ハンマースプリングスはクライストチャーチの北西106kmに位置し、有名な観光地です。まず、川でジェットボートに乗りました。とてもエキサイティングな体験でしたが、天気はかなり寒かったです。その後、ハンマースプリングス温泉プール＆スパに行きました。温泉とエキサイティングなウォータースライダーがありました。温泉がある国は日本だけだと思っていたので、ニュージーランドにも温泉があると聞いて驚きました。ニュージーランドに来てからずっとシャワーを浴びていたので、温泉に入ることができて嬉しかったです。 ここで伝えたいのは、ニュージーランド人はお風呂に入る文化がなく、日中はシャワーを浴びるだけだということです。夕食時に、先ほど述べた日本とニュージーランドの文化の違いをホストファミリーに説明できたのが嬉しかったです。以前は「楽しかった」などとしか言えませんでしたが、最近はもっと詳しく話せるようになりました。文化の違いも私にとっては興味深いことです。)
