～以下、生徒による留学レポート～

（今日はマニラへ移動し、研修プログラムに参加しました。私たちはマクタン・セブ国際空港に到着し、マニラ行きの飛行機に乗りました。しかし、フライトが遅延し、搭乗時間が2時間遅れました。マニラには午後2時30分頃に到着し、午後4時に遅めの昼食をとりました。）

After lunch, we visited a place called Happy Land.Happy Land is known as one of the poorest slum areas in Manila.The name “Happy Land” comes from “hapilan,” a Bisaya word meaning a dumpsite.People living there earn money by sorting plastic bottles to sell to recycling shops or by peeling garlic to sell to restaurants.As we walked through Happy Land, children came up to us and greeted us with “Hello!”Adults also welcomed our visit warmly.Children were running around and playing with their friends, while adults were working or chatting with one another.

（昼食後、私たちは「ハッピーランド」と呼ばれる場所を訪れました。ハッピーランドは、マニラで最も貧しいスラム街の一つとして知られています。「ハッピーランド」という名前は、ビサヤ語でゴミ捨て場を意味する「hapilan」に由来しています。そこに住む人々は、ペットボトルを分別してリサイクルショップに売ったり、ニンニクの皮をむいてレストランに売ったりして生計を立てています。ハッピーランドを歩いていると、子どもたちが自分から近づいてきて「ハロー！」と声をかけてくれました。大人の人たちも、私たちの訪問を温かく迎えてくれました。子どもたちは友達と走り回って遊び、大人たちは働いたり談笑したりしていました。）

Next, we went to a place called Smokey Mountain.Smokey Mountain was once a huge garbage mountain, but the government has gradually reduced the trash and started planting trees.Some people live under bridges, while others have built small houses using logs and scrap materials.The living environment there was worse than in Happy Land.However, many people there also welcomed us with smiles.When we raised our cameras, children ran toward us and said, “Let’s take pictures together!”At both Happy Land and Smokey Mountain, I saw many smiling faces.Those smiles made me realize that even in difficult environments, people can live joyfully.It showed me the resilience of the human spirit.To be honest, I wondered at first if they might see tourists like us in a strange way. But because they spoke to us so kindly, I realized that many Filipinos are genuinely pure-hearted and warm people.

（次に、私たちはスモーキーマウンテンと呼ばれる場所へ行きました。スモーキーマウンテンはかつて巨大なゴミの山でしたが、政府によってゴミが減らされ、現在は木が植えられています。橋の下で生活している人もいれば、木材などを組み合わせて家を建てている人もいます。生活環境はハッピーランドよりも厳しいと感じました。

しかし、そこでも多くの人が笑顔で私たちを迎えてくれました。カメラを向けると、子どもたちが「一緒に写真を撮ろう！」と言って駆け寄ってきました。ハッピーランドでもスモーキーマウンテンでも、たくさんの笑顔を見ることができました。その笑顔を見て、どんなに厳しい環境でも人は前向きに生きられるのだと気づきました。それは人間の強さを教えてくれました。正直、最初は私たちのような観光客を不思議な目で見ているのではないかと思いました。しかし、とても親切に接してくれたことで、多くのフィリピンの人々が心優しく温かい人たちだと分かりました。）

Finally, we returned to Happy Land and visited BYSMP (Bless the Children Foundation), an NGO that supports children and their families in Tondo.When we entered the room, many children welcomed us with smiles.We handed out gifts and canned food to them.Seeing the children receive their gifts and laugh happily gave me energy and a strong desire to help protect their future.People living there receive support for their livelihoods and their children’s education from NGOs.We can also provide support and help people living in such environments.Through this training program, I felt a strong responsibility to tell others about these realities and the importance of offering support.

（最後に私たちはハッピーランドに戻り、トンド地区で子どもたちとその家族を支援しているNGO「BYSMP（Bless the Children Foundation）」を訪れました。部屋に入ると、たくさんの子どもたちが笑顔で迎えてくれました。私たちはプレゼントや缶詰の食料を配りました。プレゼントを受け取り、無邪気に笑う子どもたちの姿を見て、私自身が元気をもらい、彼らの未来を守りたいと強く思いました。そこに住む人々は、NGOから生活や子どもたちの教育についての支援を受けています。私たちにも、そのような環境で暮らす人々を支援することができます。この研修を通して、こうした現実があること、そして支援できることを多くの人に伝えたいと強く感じました。）
