Every July, HSU hosts the Japanese Language & Culture Seminar for students from its partner universities.

Japanese Culture Experiences
Traditional Culture Workshop
Participants are divided into three groups to experience origami, calligraphy, and karuta. You can enjoy learning Japanese culture through hands-on activities, even if you are not confident in Japanese. Spend a fun, culturally-enriching time with new friends.
Tea Ceremony Experience and Exchange with Affiliated Junior and Senior High School Students
Participants visit Hiroshima Kyoso Junior and Senior High School to observe Japanese classes. Afterward, they experience a tea ceremony hosted by the school’s tea ceremony club, learning about the spirit of Japanese hospitality. This is a special opportunity to experience both school life and traditional culture.
Okonomiyaki Cooking Experience
Participants visit Otafuku Sauce, a company famous for Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki sauce. You can make okonomiyaki yourself and enjoy it fresh with everyone, turning this into a fun and delicious experience unique to Hiroshima. Halal and vegetarian options are available.
Miyajima
Participants visit the World Heritage Site Itsukushima Shrine to learn about Japanese history and culture. You can also enjoy a Momiji Manju making experience (maple-leaf-shaped sweet cake). Afterward, there is free time to explore the island and enjoy the local food. This is a special day to fully enjoy Hiroshima’s scenery and flavors.
Peace Memorial Park
Participants visit Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and the Peace Memorial Museum. At the museum, you can learn about people’s lives before and after the atomic bombing and the extent of the damage. Through the exhibits, participants can reflect on how war affects civilian life. You can also listen to a talk by an atomic bomb survivor and hear their firsthand experiences. This is a meaningful time to reflect on peace, the value of life, and your own future.
Kagura Performance
Kagura is a traditional performing art of Hiroshima that has long been performed to express gratitude to the gods and pray for good harvests. Today, it is popular as a dynamic stage performance featuring beautiful costumes, powerful music, and energetic dances. Experience stories based on Japanese mythology and folklore up close.
Field Trip
Participants visit nearby sightseeing spots in Hiroshima Prefecture. This enjoyable field trip allows you to experience Japan’s nature and history.
Exchange with Junior High School Students
Participants visit Otsuka Junior High School to interact with Japanese students. This is a fun opportunity to experience Japanese school life firsthand.
Homestay (Optional)
Participants may join a one-night, two-day homestay with a local family. This is a valuable opportunity to experience Japanese home life and culture directly. Interacting with the host family will become an unforgettable memory.
