International Student Admissions (Undergraduate Programs)

For undergraduate international student admissions at HSU, taking the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) is mandatory. Applicants are evaluated comprehensively based on EJU scores, a written essay, an interview, and submitted application documents. Examination subjects and score weightings differ by faculty, so applicants should refer to the official entrance examination guidelines for details.

Graduate School

HSU Graduate School accepts international students in all graduate programs. In principle, applicants must have completed 16 years of formal education overseas and possess Japanese language proficiency equivalent to at least JLPT N2. Selection is based on a comprehensive evaluation of a written examination in specialized subjects, an oral examination, and application documents, with particular emphasis on the academic ability and motivation to conduct independent research after enrollment. Examination subjects and selection methods vary by graduate school, so applicants should refer to the official entrance examination guidelines. Tuition reduction programs and scholarship schemes for international students are also available, allowing students to receive financial support while studying.

Reduction of Fees for International Students

To reduce the financial burden on degree-seeking international students, HSU offers a Fee Reduction Program for International Students. Under this program, international students with excellent academic performance who are deemed to have financial difficulty may receive either a full or half reduction of tuition fees. The reduction period is one year, and applications must be submitted every academic year. Eligible applicants are international students enrolled (or scheduled to enroll) in a regular undergraduate or graduate program who hold, or are expected to obtain, a “Student” residence status under the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act, and who are recognized as having financial difficulty.

However, applicants are not eligible if any of the following apply:
  1. If financial support from the home country, excluding admission and tuition fees, averages 90,001 yen or more per month.
  2. If the applicant has a financial supporter residing in Japan with an annual income of 5 million yen or more.
  3. If the applicant exceeds the standard period of study.
There are fixed quotas for fee reductions for new students and continuing students, with limits on the number of recipients (Undergraduate new students: full tuition reduction for 7 students, half reduction for 8 students; continuing students: full reduction for 21 students, half reduction for 24 students). Applications require designated application forms and EJU results. For further details regarding the fee reduction program, please contact the International Affairs Center.
